M1 momentum to continue under Labor

Labor’s record investment in the M1 will continue under a $5 billion plan to slash travel times and support more than 3600 jobs.

The centrepieces of the plan are a $1 billion M1 upgrade between Daisy Hill and Logan and the $1.5 billion, 16km stage one route of the Second M1 between Coomera and Nerang.

Fully-funded upgrades of M1 exits at Yatala South (Exit 41) and Pimpama (Exit 49) will also be delivered under the plan.
 
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said only Labor would build a better M1.

“My government stands on a strong record of delivering for M1 motorists,” the Premier said.
 
“Our record investment is making sure people can get home sooner and more safely between two of the biggest cities in Australia.
 
“We have already completed two M1 upgrades at the Gateway Merge and between Mudgeeraba and Varsity Lakes.
 
“Two more projects supporting almost 1600 jobs are underway now, between Eight Mile Plains and Daisy Hill, and the massive $1 billion upgrade between Varsity Lakes and Tugun.
 
“We’re not stopping there either.
 
“If re-elected, my government will create more than 1390 additional local jobs with $2.7 billion in M1 projects and the Second M1 to keep Brisbane and the Gold Coast moving, and Queensland working.”
 
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the key M1 exits would also be upgraded under the plan.
 
“Our M1 exit upgrade program will continue to support growing communities, targeting exits at Yatala North, Yatala South, Pimpama and Ormeau,” Mr Bailey said.
 
“Building stage one of the Second M1 will take up to 60,000 cars a day off the M1 around its busiest sections at Coomera.
 
“These projects are part of Labor’s congestion-busting plan to support growing communities around one of the busiest highways in the nation.”
 
Minister for Housing and Public Works and Springwood MP Mick de Brenni said Labor’s fully funded M1 plan was not only good news for motorists but also public transport users too.
 
“Locals are always telling me they want better public transport in their area and to major hubs in Brisbane and Logan – and we’re delivering,” Mr de Brenni said.
 
“The $1 billion M1 upgrade between Logan Road and Loganlea Road will extend the busway further south to Logan, including new stations and park n rides.”
 
Member for Macalister Melissa McMahon said the pledge to continue M1 upgrades and extend public transport options to Loganholme demonstrated Labor’s strong record on transport planning.
 
“While the M1 is the major highway connecting Brisbane and the Gold Coast, it is also a road my community relies on,” Ms McMahon said.
 
“We’ve seen excellent progress on the Gateway merge upgrade this year, so I welcome Labor’s commitment to keep delivering M1 upgrades further south.”
 
Member for Gaven Meagan Scanlon said Labor had backed investment on the Gold Coast after the region was ignored by the LNP.
 
“The M1 was already one of the busiest highways in Australia when the previous LNP Government came to power under Campbell Newman,” Ms Scanlon said.
 
“With the Deb Frecklington as his Assistant Minister, Campbell Newman’s LNP refused to spend a single new dollar upgrading the M1.
 
“Instead the LNP cut $1.6 billion from Queensland’s roads and transport budget and sacked more than 20 per cent of TMR’s staff, including 700 roadbuilders.
 
“The Palaszczuk Labor Government’s strong actions on the border has meant construction on major projects like our M1 upgrades have continued without any site shutdowns like we’ve seen in other parts of Australia and around the world.
 
“Deb Frecklington and the LNP put that at risk by recklessly calling for the borders to be opened against health advice.
 
“Now, Deb Frecklington wants to recklessly rush to a surplus, defying the advice of leading economists in a move that means cutting 30,000 Queensland jobs.
 
“Now is not the time to risk Deb Frecklington and the LNP’s job destroying plan for Queensland.”
